Bholi was different from other children. She fell from a cot when she was small, which affected her brain. She started speaking very late and used to stammer. Her face also had pockmarks. Because of these problems, her father was worried about her future and marriage.

भोली दूसरे बच्चों से अलग थी। बचपन में वह खाट से गिर गई थी जिससे उसके दिमाग पर असर पड़ा। वह बहुत देर से बोलना सीख पाई और हकलाती थी। उसके चेहरे पर चेचक के दाग भी थे। इसलिए उसके पिता को उसके भविष्य और शादी की चिंता थी।

Bholi was sent to school because the Tehsildar told Ramlal to send his daughters to the new school. Bholi’s mother did not want to send the other girls. Since Bholi was different from them, her parents decided to send her to school.

भोली को स्कूल इसलिए भेजा गया क्योंकि तहसीलदार ने रामलाल से कहा था कि वह अपनी बेटियों को नए स्कूल में भेजे। भोली की माँ दूसरी बेटियों को नहीं भेजना चाहती थी। इसलिए माता-पिता ने भोली को ही स्कूल भेजने का निर्णय लिया।

Yes, Bholi finds her teacher very different from the people at home. At home, people ignore her and make fun of her. But her teacher is kind and patient. She does not laugh at Bholi and encourages her to speak. This makes Bholi feel happy and confident.

The marriage does not take place because Bishamber demands five thousand rupees as dowry after seeing Bholi’s pockmarked face. Bholi understands that he is greedy and refuses to marry him. She decides to keep her self-respect. Therefore, the wedding is cancelled and the marriage party leaves.
