Question 1Why was the young seagull afraid to fly? Do you think all young birds are afraid to make their first flight, or are some birds more timid than others? Do you think a human baby also finds it a challenge to take its first steps?
Answer:
The young seagull was afraid to fly because it was his first attempt. He was not confident about his wings and feared that he might fall.
It is common to feel scared while doing something for the first time. Many young birds may feel nervous before their first flight, though some may be less fearful than others. In the same way, a human baby also finds it difficult and challenging to take the first steps.
Hindi Translation:
युवा सीगल अपनी पहली उड़ान के कारण डर रहा था। उसे अपने पंखों पर विश्वास नहीं था और उसे गिरने का डर था।
पहली बार कुछ करना स्वाभाविक रूप से डर पैदा करता है। कई छोटे पक्षी अपनी पहली उड़ान से पहले घबराते हैं, हालांकि कुछ कम डरपोक हो सकते हैं। इसी प्रकार, एक शिशु को भी अपने पहले कदम उठाना कठिन और चुनौतीपूर्ण लगता है।
Question 2“The sight of the food maddened him.” What does this suggest? What compelled the young seagull to finally fly?
Answer:
This line shows that the young seagull was extremely hungry. Seeing the food made him restless and desperate.
His hunger became stronger when he saw his mother eating fish. He cried and begged her for food. When his mother flew towards him with a piece of fish and then stopped in the air, he could not control himself. In his strong desire to get the food, he jumped forward. At that moment, his hunger became greater than his fear, and this pushed him to fly for the first time.

यह पंक्ति दिखाती है कि युवा सीगल बहुत भूखा था। भोजन को देखकर वह बेचैन और व्याकुल हो गया।
जब उसने अपनी माँ को मछली खाते देखा तो उसकी भूख और बढ़ गई। वह भोजन के लिए चिल्लाने लगा। जब उसकी माँ मुँह में मछली लेकर उसके पास आई और बीच में रुक गई, तो वह अपने आप को रोक नहीं पाया। भोजन पाने की तीव्र इच्छा में उसने छलांग लगा दी। उस समय उसकी भूख उसके डर से अधिक हो गई और उसी ने उसे पहली बार उड़ने के लिए मजबूर कर दिया।
Question 3“They were beckoning to him, calling shrilly.” Why did the seagull’s father and mother threaten him and cajole him to fly?
Answer:
The young seagull was scared to take his first flight. Even after watching his brothers and sisters fly, he did not have the courage to try.
His parents wanted him to learn to fly and become independent. They called out loudly to encourage him and even scolded him. They threatened to leave him hungry so that he would overcome his fear. They did this to push him to try flying and gain confidence.

युवा सीगल अपनी पहली उड़ान से डर रहा था। अपने भाई-बहनों को उड़ते हुए देखने के बाद भी उसमें हिम्मत नहीं आई।
उसके माता-पिता चाहते थे कि वह उड़ना सीखे और आत्मनिर्भर बने। वे उसे जोर से पुकारते और डाँटते थे। उन्होंने उसे भूखा छोड़ने की धमकी भी दी ताकि वह अपना डर छोड़ दे। वे ऐसा इसलिए कर रहे थे ताकि वह उड़ने का प्रयास करे और आत्मविश्वास पाए।

Question 1“I’ll take the risk.” What is the risk? Why does the narrator take it?
Answer:
The risk was to fly through the dark and dangerous storm clouds. The narrator decided to take the risk because he wanted to reach Paris in time to celebrate Christmas with his family.
Hindi Translation:
जो जोखिम वह उठा रहा था वह था काले और खतरनाक तूफानी बादलों में उड़ान भरना। वह जोखिम इसलिए उठा रहा था ताकि वह क्रिसमस अपने परिवार के साथ पेरिस में मना सके।
Question 2Describe the narrator’s experience as he flew the aeroplane into the storm.
Answer:
When the narrator flew into the storm, it became completely dark and he could not see anything. The plane shook and turned in the air. His compass stopped working, and other instruments, including the radio, also failed.
Suddenly, he saw another aeroplane. The pilot of that plane signaled him to follow. He was relieved to have help because he was running low on fuel. He followed the other plane, came out of the clouds, saw the runway, and safely landed his plane.

जब कथाकार तूफान में उड़ान भर रहा था, सब कुछ पूरी तरह अंधेरा हो गया और बाहर कुछ दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था। हवाई जहाज हवा में हिल रहा था और घूम रहा था। उसका कंपास काम नहीं कर रहा था और अन्य उपकरण, जैसे रेडियो भी बंद हो गए थे।
अचानक उसने एक और हवाई जहाज देखा। उस हवाई जहाज के पायलट ने उसे संकेत किया कि उसका अनुसरण करे। उसे मदद मिलकर राहत मिली क्योंकि ईंधन बहुत कम बचा था। उसने दूसरे जहाज का अनुसरण किया, बादलों से बाहर आया, रनवे देखा और सुरक्षित रूप से हवाई जहाज उतारा।
Question 3Why does the narrator say, “I landed and was not sorry to walk away from the old Dakota…”?
Answer:
The narrator was happy to land safely after flying through the dark storm. He was not upset to leave his plane behind. He wished he could thank the pilot who guided him, but he was so relieved and glad to be safe that he did not feel sad about it.

Question 4What made the woman in the control centre look at the narrator strangely?
Answer:
The woman in the control centre was surprised when the narrator asked about the other aeroplane and its pilot. She told him that no other aeroplane had appeared on the radar, which made his story seem strange to her.

Answer:
It was probably the narrator himself who helped him to get through the storm. The woman at the control centre saw only his plane on the radar, and there was no other plane flying that night. He might have imagined the other plane because of fear. Since he was a skilled pilot, it could have been his own courage and skill that guided him safely.
