Question 1How is Ausable different from other secret agents?
Answer:
Ausable is very different from other secret agents. He stays in a small, simple room in a dark hotel, not in a fancy or exciting place. He is very fat and speaks French and German only a little, with an American accent. Unlike typical spies, he does not get secret messages from mysterious women. He only receives a phone call for appointments. These things make him unusual as a spy.

Fowler was a writer who had come to meet Ausable. His first real thrill of the day came when he saw a man in Ausable’s room pointing a pistol at both Ausable and himself.

Question 2How does Ausable say he got in?
Answer: Ausable said he believed Max had entered the room through the balcony. He mentioned that this was the second time in a month someone had come in this way.

Question 1“Ausable did not fit any description of a secret agent Fowler had ever read.” What do secret agents in books and films look like, in your opinion? Discuss in groups or in class some stories or movies featuring spies, detectives and secret agents, and compare their appearance with that of Ausable in this story.
Answer:
In books and movies, secret agents are often tall, strong, and handsome. They usually do exciting stunts and have beautiful companions. They may smoke a pipe or cigar and use high-tech gadgets. Characters like James Bond show these qualities. In Indian or Bengali fiction, characters like Feluda are clever detectives but look ordinary. Ausable is very different because he is fat, ordinary-looking, and does not fit the usual image of a spy.

Answer:
Ausable tells Max that someone had entered the room through the balcony before. He also says he asked the police for protection because he has important papers. Max gets scared and wants to escape, so he jumps out of the window. Ausable’s calm and clever talking makes the story believable.

Question 3Looking back at the story, when do you think Ausable thought up his plan for getting rid of Max? Do you think he had worked out his plan in detail right from the beginning? Or did he make up a plan taking advantage of events as they happened?
Answer:
Ausable did not plan everything in detail from the start. He made his plan as events happened. When Max entered and there was a knock at the door, Ausable quickly made up the balcony story and said the police were coming. Max got scared and jumped out.
